Documents/Blender Assets/Voxel VFX 3D. The folder holds Voxel VFX 3D.blend, its catalogs, a README and the license.Voxel VFX 3D is not an add-on. There is nothing to enable, and a .blend you send to someone else plays the effects as long as they have Blender 5.2 or newer.
An effect is an ordinary object: move, rotate and scale it, parent it to something, duplicate it with Shift D. Its mesh is empty; the Voxel VFX 3D modifier builds the cubes for the current frame, so the effect only appears when the modifier is on.
Change an effect's size by scaling the object, or with Pixel Size in the modifier's Baked Effect panel (the size of one art pixel, 0.025 m by default).
Select an effect and open the Modifiers tab (the wrench) in the Properties editor.
| Input | What it does |
|---|---|
| Start Frame | The scene frame the effect starts on. Offset copies of the same effect so they don't move in step. |
| Speed | Playback speed: 0.5 is half speed, 2 is twice as fast. |
| Loop | On for every effect by default. Turn it off to play a one-shot (an explosion, a hit, a level-up) once from Start Frame; before and after that it shows nothing. |
| Voxel Size | The size of the cubes, 0.025 m by default. A bigger size keeps the effect as big but uses chunkier cubes: less detail, far fewer cubes, faster. |
| Viewport Simplify | 1 to 8. In the viewport only, the cubes are this many times bigger. Renders always use Voxel Size. |
| LOD Distance | 0 is off. Otherwise the cubes get one step coarser for every this many metres the effect is from the active camera. |
| Glow | How much the voxels shine by themselves. |
| Light | How strongly the effect's own glow tints its voxels. |
| Pixel Size | The size of one art pixel: the effect's scale. |
| Voxels, Index, Palette | The baked effect, as three images packed in the file. Leave them as they are. |
| Frames, FPS | The effect's own frame count and frame rate. Use Speed to change timing, not these. |
The voxels are emissive. For the glow around them, open the Compositing workspace, press New to start a compositor node tree and add a Glare node set to Bloom between Render Layers and the output (a threshold around 0.5 to 1 works well). Point or area lights near bright effects (a campfire, a torch) sell the light they give off.
Effects light their surroundings by themselves. Add bloom in the compositor the same way if you want the halo.
Pixel art looks best with a dark world and a little fog or bloom. The library's preview renders use a near-black world and bloom.
244 effects in 21 catalogs:
Transitions are wall-sized objects (4 x 2.25 m at the default size) that close and open again. Weather fills a deep volume, about 8 x 4.5 m wide and several metres deep. Status effects show on a small stand-in figure.
Check the modifier is enabled in the viewport, and that Loop is on, or that the current frame is after Start Frame. Some effects start small (a spark that grows into an explosion): play a few frames.
Add bloom (see Rendering) and use a dark world. In Solid view the voxels show without their glow: switch to Material Preview or Rendered.
Make sure the folder you added in Preferences is the one with Voxel VFX 3D.blend and blender_assets.cats.txt in it, then pick the library in the Asset Browser's top-left menu. Blender 5.2 or newer is needed.
Raise Viewport Simplify, set LOD Distance, or a bigger Voxel Size on effects far from the camera.
